This event is the second in Sydney, and is proudly hosted by the University of New South Wales.

Held in parallel with the UNSW Engineering High School Information Day (HSID), 3 x 1.5 hour workshops will provide professional development for STEM teachers (BOSTES approved), while their fully-supervised students are experiencing UNSW’s HSID.  Of course, teachers may register even if their students are not attending the Information Day!

The Engineering High School Information Day is free for students to attend and gives them a taste of studying engineering at UNSW. Schools can send up to eight year 12 students. Visit unsw.to/hsid2016 to find out more.

The three 1.5 hour workshops will be led by scientists and engineers, experts in their fields, demonstrating how their disciplines use the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics taught every day in your school is actually used in the real world.  Teachers will also gain ideas and resources to assist embedding these concepts into their classrooms.

The program will be finalised soon.

The timing of each workshop is designed to coincide with the HSID program, so teachers can check on their students during breaks, if necessary.

UNSW staff will supervise students (as normal) during the HSID, leaving teachers free to attend these sessions.

About LEaST Workshops:

Linking Engineers and Scientists with Teachers (LEaST) events are unique.  Teachers leave the workshop with a number of positive outcomes:

  •  having worked with professional engineers and scientists, exploring problems and tasks that relate directly to their curriculum, teachers find confidence in their ability to relate what they are teaching to the real world.
  • meeting and talking with professional engineers and scientists, which provides valuable links and contacts.
  • hearing from universities first-hand what the expectations are for their students when they start their tertiary career.
  • fully informed of the latest advances in their subject area.
  • receive resources and ideas that can be used in your classroom tomorrow.
  • network with colleagues they may not normally come in contact with, providing valuable links and resources.

A LEaST workshop is designed to showcase the engineers from the local area and provide opportunities for teachers from right across the STEM spectrum to form lasting connections.

Teachers who specialise in Junior Science and Mathematics will also gain valuable insights and resources.
