This event is our nineth event in Victoria , and is proudly hosted by La Trobe University and sponsored by LEAP into Engineering.

If you currently attend a Widening Participation / LEAP school, please contact Ninetta Wood (n.wood@latrobe.edu.au) – LEAP are offering a number of paid scholarships to attend this event!

An Engineering Link Project follows the design – make – appraise model of problem solving.  Students in Year 10, 11 and 12 will participate in a different engineering module each day, facilitated by a local engineer.  Each module is designed to showcase an example of engineering in that discipline, as well as being:

  • hands-on
  • practical
  • relevant to maths and science being studied at school
  • interesting
  • challenging
  • fun!

Students will choose two experiences (one per day).  After the engineer has presented the problem to be solved, each group will fully prepare their ideas and proposed engineering solution, present it to the engineer for approval and then construct their prototype.  Each group’s solution will be tested to ensure it meets the criteria set, then extended beyond the scope of the design, usually to destruction!

Projects in disciplines such as Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Aeronautical, Environmental and Robotics Engineering will be offered, subject to engineer availability and student numbers.

Teachers are welcome to attend (at no cost).  Please contact us if you would like to volunteer (we pay all reasonable expenses).

La Trobe University staff will also provide detailed information about studying engineering (in general) and at La Trobe Uni in particular.

Live too far from Bundoora Campus?

Supervised twin-share accommodation is provided in a location close to La Trobe University.  Students will be escorted to and from the university each day via tram, and fully supervised by teachers in the evening.  An extra nights’ accommodation (before the event) is also available.  Accommodation + registration prices include breakfast (for each night’s accommodation) and dinner (thanks to LEAP into Engineering), as well as the Project registration (which includes lunch).

Description:

La Trobe University is an Australian multi-campus public research university whose flagship campus, the largest metropolitan campus in the country, is located in Bundoora, Victoria. The university was established in 1964 following the assent of the La Trobe University Act by Victorian Parliament on 9 December of that year, becoming the third university in the state and the twelfth university in Australia. While it does not share the architectural aesthetics of its sandstone peers, at its core La Trobe, as much as Monash, was “among the last of the old universities in Australia”. Of the many aspirations for La Trobe by its founders, one of its most prominent achievements, and a great source of university pride, has been its long-standing commitment to providing access to higher education to those traditionally excluded from the sector. In 2015 it was ranked in the top 100 universities under 50 in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. Additionally, the 2015–16 THE performance indicators placed La Trobe as 12th in Australia for teaching, 11th for research, and 13th for industry income.
