M7-M12 Integration Project Bridge Competition
TELG was very excited to extend our relationship with Transurban and bring our Bridge Competition to New South Wales.
To help schools plan for the competition, we ran an introductory webinar in May, attended by over 30 teachers. Engineers from Transurban provided insights into bridge design, and hints and tips on building a bridge out of spaghetti. The bridges had to be made entirely of spaghetti and glue, and weigh less than 300g, including the load hook.
Over 40 schools initially expressed interest in participating in the competition, and each school was sent a load hook.
The tests were held at the Westlink M7 Eastern Creek Control Centre. Engineers from Western Sydney University and Engineers Australia supported the event, providing interactive displays and information sessions for the attending students. Our excited guests were provided a magnificent lunch of delicious pizzas and gelato, thanks to Transurban.
After testing over 40 bridges, the winning bridge (from James Ruse Agricultural High School), handled a peak load of 20.26 kg.
The overall places for 2024 were:
First: James Ruse Agricultural High School “Team 7” – $1000
Second: James Ruse Agricultural High School “Team 1” – $500
Third: Lane Cove West Public School “Dodgy Bridge” – $250
All of the bridges were judged by our visiting engineers on their structural and aesthetic properties, and two prizes were awarded $250 each:
– Morning Session Winner: Gosford High School “Linguini Load Bearers”
– Afternoon Session Winner: Lane Cove West Public School “Dodgy Bridge”
We can’t wait until 2025!
If you would like to register your school’s interest in participating in 2025 (no obligation or cost to you), please complete this form and we’ll send you information about the competition in the new year.
