What is the Bridge Competition?
The competition is a fun and challenging opportunity for students to test their engineering skills and experience the planning, creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork required for a career in engineering.
The competition is open to all students from grades 5 to 12. Students can register as an individual or through their school. Teams can have up to 4 students.
Teams are challenged to build the strongest bridge possible weighing no more than 300 g (including the load plate, provided for free), constructed with only store-bought spaghetti and glue, and to span a 35cm gap. A load hook is provided for testing, and its mass must be included in the overall mass of the bridge.
Teacher Webinar
A free PD webinar is held early in the competition timeframe to support all participants. All registered teachers received a link to the recording of the webinar.
The webinar, featuring a civil engineer, focuses on the physics of forces and specifically how they affect bridges. We also provide insights and tips on entering the competition and ideas on how to design and build a bridge from spaghetti.
Queensland
2024 will see the tenth anniversary of the competition in Queensland. Multiple locations for testing across Queensland. The competition is open now and closes on August 31.
New South Wales
2024 will be the first year of the competition in New South Wales and we are excited to partner with Transurban for this unique learning experience. The competition is open now and testing is on August 9th.
