Shining the Light on Science
Running in National Science Week is a community activity called ‘Shining the Light on Science’. This activity is to celebrate the National Year of Light, and highlight the importance of Science in the community. To do this we are using one of the most successful technologies at capturing light, the camera. Townsville is holding a Photography Competition, with a range of competition sections, to highlight the importance of science, promote science in the community and engage the creative nature of people through photography.
There are three categories:
Science in our community | Women in Science | International Year of Light |
Celebrating science in our community. Showcasing the science that is all around us. Townsville is Alive with Curiosity, a place where you can discover, connect and learn. Shine the light on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in our Community. | Highlighting women who are involved in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) industry. Females make up half the population, however contribute only 30% of the scientific workforce.
We need to shine the light on the importance of Women in Science and the excellent skill set that women contribute to Science. |
Light plays a vital role in our daily lives and is an imperative cross-cutting discipline of science in the 21st century. It has revolutionised medicine, opened up international communication via the Internet, and continues to be central to linking cultural, economic and political aspects of the global society. |
