A STEM-Sell is a program for Year 8 and 9 students. Hosted either at a venue nominated by the sponsor or at a local high school, a STEM-Sell is a low-stakes competition, where teams of three students from each school complete an engineering challenge.
In the morning session, guest engineers lead a conversation about what engineering is, the exciting opportunities this career can provide and some specifics about the particular discipline that forms the basis of the challenge.
During the day, the students will inspect the facilities of the host sponsor and observe current research projects and highlights of the location.
What do you do at a STEM-Sell?
- Teams of three participate in team-building activities
- TELG staff and engineers introduce the discipline the project is based upon, and provide the background mathematics, science and engineering principles needed
- The project is presented, materials examined and the problem identified
- Teams design, construct and test their solutions to the problem
- Winning team is announced and the prize awarded.
- Final questions and discussion with the engineers about what was learned on the day.
- Lunch and morning tea provided
Over lunch, students have a great opportunity to chat with engineers in an informal way, where they get to ask questions about their career, opportunities in the profession, what they like (and don’t like) about being an engineer and anything else they feel they need to know.
We have a range of programs that we offer, depending on the engineers and the location of the event. Our projects are all hands-on, requiring a level of mathematics and science knowledge and the ability to solve a reasonably complex problem, in teams, in a short time frame.
Our Projects draw inspiration from a variety of engineering disciplines, such as civil and mechanical engineering.
